How much dye powder do I use for an 8 oz bottle?
For a standard, medium-intensity color the general rule of thumb is 2 level teaspoons of dye powder per 8 ounces of warm water.
However, if you are mixing an extra deep color like black or dark navy, you may need up to 4 to 8 teaspoons for that same 8 oz bottle. Use our calculator to scale your intensity automatically.
Can I use this calculator for bleach dyeing or reverse tie dye?
This calculator is specifically designed for adding dye powder to water. However if you are doing reverse tie dye (bleaching a black shirt and then adding color back in) you can absolutely use this tool to mix the exact colors you want to apply over the bleached areas.
Why is warm water recommended?
Procion MX dyes dissolve best in lukewarm water (around 105°F or 40°C). If the water is too cold, the powder will clump and block your bottle tips. If the water is boiling hot, it can prematurely exhaust the dye causing it to lose its strength before it ever hits the fabric.
Paste up your dye powder with a little bit of warm water first, then fill the rest of the bottle.
